Gulf of Fethiye, Turkey

Gulf of Fethiye, Turkey

Gulf of Fethiye, Turkey

The sea is a rich deep turquoise and its shoreline a bold teal of evergreens--Turkey offers five thousand miles of coastline and is one of the most attractive sailing destinations in all of the Mediterranean. Travelers have dubbed this region the Turkish Riviera in reference to its sunny shores and beautiful coastal retreats. Turkish people have long known that this is a place to travel to for relaxation and rejuvenation on the sea. This part of the Aegean Sea offers serene calm beauty with a storied history of sailing for exploration and discovery.

Sailing the Turkish itinerary is exotic for anybody not from this region of the world-- the food, language, culture, and even the liquor are all distinct. You can hear the call to prayer five times a day echoing along the coast. When docking alongside a restaurant, you’ll be greeted like family and treated as the personal guest of the restaurant owner. Food is aromatically packed with intense and pleasurable flavor. In many ways, life here can be simple-- a perfect day is drinking a glass of rakia, sitting on a comfortable pillow playing a game of backgammon.

Travel Tip:

Dalyan River

The Dalyan River is located west of the Gulf of Fethiye in the district of Marmaris and a day’s sail along an open sea passage. The coastline has limited safe anchorages along the way and the nearest safe port with easy access to the river being the town of Ekincik, a small beachy village popular among locals during the summer months. Ekincik has a large bay with a suitable anchorages and home to two marinas. Here, you can hire a local guide aboard a traditional wooden fishing boat to take you on a tour of the Dalyan River.

Kaunos + Tomb Bay

Back in the gulf, a sail here will take you by extravagant tombs, including King Kaunos, carved out of the dusty stone cliff face along the shore. Many cultures throughout the world create monuments for the dead, for the Lycians, they believed the dead would enter the afterlife by a magic winged creature and the larger and taller the tomb, the better off they would be in their afterlife.

Sailing in Tomb Bay is a pleasant leg of the journey. The bay is busy with fellow sailboats enjoying the light afternoon breeze and majestic wooden gulet sailboats motoring along with their sails filling the sky. Mainland Turkey wraps around like an arm lined with various islands that block any larger waves from entering the bay. With your sails full, you will glide along towards the next stopover, enjoying the views of the beautifully carved tombs from your boat.

Tersane Island

Waking up in the Bay of Tersane and seeing the family residents prepare Turkish tea and coffee for the sailors along the dock, you are reminded that the only way to get to Tersane Koyu Restaurant is by boat. The enjoyment of the calm and quiet nature, as you swab the decks and swim in the still waters, is an experience unmatched by many others in life. This place embodies Turkish hospitality and their appreciation for mariners visiting their lovely shores.

Göcek

On the western side of the bay are the attractive harbor and charming town of Göcek, the premier yachting center and home to six marinas with wonderful restaurants, markets for provisioning, hotels, and of course, a Turkish bath. Göcek is the perfect location to start your sailing itinerary and centrally located among the most interesting surrounding islands and bays. Sailors from all over the world walk the docks as they gear up for their adventurous sailing itinerary along the majestic coast. While they cart provisions and supplies to their sailboats along the docks, full of excitement as they look out to the shockingly pristine bay. An intoxicating smell wafts in the air from the Turkish pine trees that line the shore

Gemiler Island

Sailing eastward crossing the bay and you’ll pass by Gemiler Island. Part of the allure of sailing in Turkey is the opportunity to explore the diversity of significant ruins that span a 3000 year period. Bring your sailboat to the anchorages near by, you can see these ruins up close and outside of museums or overly guided tours. Anchoring at Gemiler island for the night affords you the opportunity to wander an early Byzintine settlement. Though tour guides are provided, you can easily dinghy ashore for your own adventure wandering these mystical sights on your own accord, allowing your imagination to wander with you and build a mental image of what the magnificent buildings looked like that once stood strong on the island grounds.

Cold Water Bay (Soguk Su Koyu)

Soguk Su Koyu, also known as Cold Water Bay is a charming cove that welcomes sailors with open arms. There is a restaurant located at the top of the ridge, just a short walk from where sailboats sit an anchor moored stern-to the edges of the cove. Take a swim off the transom of your boat and you’ll quickly realize where the bay received its nickname. An underwater stream flowing from the mountains above feeds into the bay. The surface of the water is the warm Mediterranean, but plunge below a foot or two and you’ll be shocked by a refreshing blast of cold water.
