Angra dos Reis Itinerary

Travel: Fly to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) or Santos Dumont Airport (SDU). Rio is 2-hours from the starting marina by taxi and the Sailing Collective will organize and coordinate a group private taxi service.


Day 1: BR Marinas Verolme to Ilha Grande (Parnaioca)

  • Distance:

    ~18 nautical miles

  • Highlights:

    Depart from BR Marinas Verolme and set sail directly for the remote and pristine beach of Parnaioca on Ilha Grande’s southern coast. This isolated spot offers tranquility and a rugged, natural beauty that few visitors experience. Visit the nearby waterfall or relax on the wide, open beach.

  • Overnight:

    Anchor at Parnaioca for a peaceful night under the stars, surrounded by nature.

Day 2: Parnaioca to Ilha Jorge Grego

  • Distance:

    ~20 nautical miles

  • Highlights:

    Sail along Ilha Grande’s southern coast to Ilha Jorge Grego, a small, rugged island known for its dramatic rock formations and incredible diving spots. Explore the underwater world or simply enjoy the solitude this secluded island offers.

  • Overnight:

    Anchor off Ilha Jorge Grego in calm waters for a remote and adventurous night.

Day 3: Ilha Jorge Grego to Enseada do Bananal (Ilha Grande)

  • Distance:

    ~17 nautical miles

  • Highlights:

    After a morning dive or swim, sail northward along Ilha Grande’s eastern coast to Enseada do Bananal. This bay is known for its calm waters, great snorkeling, and stunning views. Visit the beaches of Bananal Pequeno and Bananal Grande or hike to the nearby ruins.

  • Overnight:

    Anchor in the sheltered waters of Enseada do Bananal for a relaxing night.

Day 4: Enseada do Bananal to Ilha da Gipóia (Praia do Dentista)

  • Distance:

    ~22 nautical miles

  • Highlights:

    Sail back towards the mainland, making your way to Ilha da Gipóia and Praia do Dentista, a well-known spot with calm, turquoise waters and soft white sand. This beach is popular with sailors for its beauty and easy anchorage, making it a great spot to swim and unwind.

  • Overnight:

    Anchor off Praia do Dentista or nearby Ilha Botinas for the night.

Day 5: Ilha da Gipóia to Ilha dos Meros

  • Distance:

    ~25 nautical miles

  • Highlights:

    Sail further offshore towards Ilha dos Meros, a small and less-visited island known for its crystal-clear waters and marine biodiversity. Snorkeling and diving here are exceptional, with abundant fish and coral reefs.

  • Overnight:

    Anchor near Ilha dos Meros or sail back towards Ilha Grande for more protected waters overnight.

Day 6: Ilha dos Meros to Saco do Céu (Ilha Grande)

  • Distance:

    ~23 nautical miles

  • Highlights:

    Sail to Saco do Céu (Sky’s Bay), a deep, sheltered bay on Ilha Grande. The calm waters are like a mirror reflecting the sky, offering a serene atmosphere. Enjoy local restaurants that serve freshly caught seafood or relax aboard your vessel in this peaceful bay.

    Anchor in Saco do Céu for a calm and quiet evening.

  • Distance:

Q. What is the water like in Costa Verde, Brazil in May?

Averages: 80 degrees during the day, 70 degrees at night. The humidity level is at 85% with an average of 3 inches of rain for the month of May. Best of all, the water is a perfect 78 degrees!

Q. Who is best for this trip?

If you're open minded, flexible, and adventurous, this trip is for you! There will be lots of boat and swim time as we explore the secluded sandy beaches and coves. This is an exploratory adventure and you should be ok with tropical environments. Most importantly, this trip is a 'go with the flow' adventure.

Q. What about the seas, will it be calm? What about the wind?

It will be! Angra dos Reis is a ginormous bay protected from the Atlantic Ocean waters. Seas are calm. It is not the windiest of locations, which means we will set the main sail and the jib but we will do a combination of sailing when there is wind and motor sailing when there is limited wind.


Q. Is it safe?

Angra dos Reis has many tourists, both foreign and local. It is generally safe for visitors and will be very safe aboard. Common sense is needed like anywhere else!

Q. Do you recommend exploring Rio de Janeiro before or after the charter?

Absolutely! Sailing Collective will offer travel recommendations and you are welcome to coordinate with the other guests and crew aboard.
