For our most remote and most adventurous sailing ground look no further than Nosey Be in Madagascar, Nosy Be means "big island" in the Malagasy language and during the course of the week we’ll circumnavigate Nosey Be and explore many of the surrounding island communities. Nosy Be is located in the northern Mozambique channel, North-West of Madagascar, one hour from the capital Antananarivo by plane. The Mozambique channel is one of the most biodiverse saltwater ecosystems on the planet and Nosy Be is the ideal starting point for an unforgettable cruise to see it. We will sail to Nosy Komba, Sakatia, Iranja, Mitsio, and Tanikely. Expect to see incredible wildlife, and gorgeous scenery but the real reason to come to madagascar is the Malagasy culture. Sail an island chain where subsistence living off the sea is a rich tradition practiced intentionally to this day.
Upon arriving in Nosey Be take a taxi from the airport to meet your captains at the selected hotel. We’ll have dinner together on the first night and talk about what’s to come. Board the boats in the morning and get situated. The bulk of the morning will be safety instruction and getting settled in to your new home for the week. Shortly after lunch we’ll drop the mooring lines and make our way around to Nosey Komba where we’ll drop anchor and sail for seven days around Nosy Be, Madagascar.
Fascene Airport (IATA: NOS, ICAO: FMNN) is an international airport located on the island of Nosy Be, just off the northwest coast of Madagascar, in the Diana region. Despite being just a single runway amongst grazing land with a open air terminal, the airport is one of the busiest in the country.
1) Fly Air Austral from France via layover in Reunion then onto Nosy Be. Air Austral has very limited flights and the best possible flights for this trip depart Paris on Wednesday May 20th and return to paris on Sunday May 31st. Please book flights as soon as possible to secure your spot on this airplane if you want the most direct route to and from the trip.
2) Fly via Antananarivo with direct flights daily to Nosy Be on Air Madagascar.
Once you arrive in Nosy Be, you can rent a car or take a taxi to the resort we will choose ahead of time to settle in before the start of the sail on Saturday day 1.
Nosy Be, being on the North-West side of Madagascar, is largely sheltered from the South-East Monsoon, which means that througout most of the year, we have thermal winds; during the day moderately from the sea, during the night lightly from the land. This keeps the waves to a minimum and makes the area a relaxed sailing experience.
Please ensure your passport is valid for the period of travel and for six months after you return. Your passport name must match the name on the flight ticket otherwise you may not be able to travel and insurance may be invalid. It is the responsibility of each individual to ensure relevant visas are obtained where necessary. The Sailing Collective cannot be held responsible for refusal of entry or travel due to lack of visas. If you are in any doubt please contact your Embassy for full details.

During days on the water, you’ll want to be wearing light and comfortable clothing. As the vast majority of your time will be spent outside, prepare for elements - bring a light rain coat just in case, a hat to shield yourself from the sun, and a set of warm clothing. Throughout the week we may dine out at a nice restaurant, so bring gear that you’ll look nice in and suits your style. Loading and unloading from the dingy can be a wet activity, a pair of shoes that you can get wet is recommended.
