ACTIVITIES & SPORTS
In addition to exploring Thailand under sail, the following list may prove helpful in planning other aspects of your time with us. We're happy to arrange any extra activities for you at the base.
Snorkeling & Diving: The diving in Thailand is excellent. Clients must carry a PADI open water or equivalent qualification to be able to dive. Unqualified divers can do courses or resort dives. Prices range from center to center, but it usually costs between 2,500 Baht and 3,500 Baht per person for two dives and lunch. If a client wishes to dive while chartering with The Moorings, we recommend two good dive centers by our base -- Raya Divers on Koh Racha Yai and Barracuda Diving on Koh Phi Phi. The Similan Islands are a world-class diving destination and are accessible between November and April, subject to weather conditions. These islands are situated 60 miles Northwest of Patong and require a minimum charter duration of 7 days for a visit. Diving equipment can be supplied, if ordered in advance, and clients can arrange to meet up with a live-aboard dive operator at one of the dive sites for tank refills. Further information is available from the base on request. The Surin Islands are another 50 miles north of the Similans and also offer superb diving, but fewer dive operators visit them. The Similan and Surin Islands are National Parks and are subject to a daily entry fee, which will be collected on site. You will be asked to complete a waiver of responsibility form prior to departure from the base, if intending to cruise to the Similan or Surin Islands.
Collapsible bags in place of large rigid suitcases are advised for ease of transport on and off the boat. Loading and unloading from the dingy can be a wet activity, a pair of shoes such as flip-flops that you can get wet if we are landing on a beach.
During days on the water, you’ll want to be wearing light and comfortable clothing. As the vast majority of your time will be spent outside, prepare for elements — bring a light raincoat just in case, a hat to shield yourself from the sun, and a set of warm clothing. Throughout the week we may dine out at a nice restaurant, so bring gear that you’ll look nice in and suits your style. Loading and unloading from the dingy can be a wet activity, a pair of shoes that you can get wet is recommended.
Situated on the Northeast coast of Asia’s premier island retreat, a mere 15 minutes to the airport, Yacht Haven Marina - Phuket is an ideal location for travelers and sailors seeking the perfect port-of-call, as a base to enjoy the island of Phuket, or as a starting point to explore the wonders of Phang Nga Bay. Yacht Haven Marina, with its proximity to Phang Nga Bay and the surrounding majestic limestone islands, is Phuket’s only deep water access marina allowing maneuvering in most states of tides. Craft capacity at the Yacht Haven Marina is 80 metres with a maximum of a 5-metre draft. The marina comfortably accommodates over 200 vessels and features newly renovated docks, boardwalk and full hook-ups including phone, electricity, water and WiFi access. Onsite amenities include newly installed showers and laundry service. Yacht Haven Marina overlooks the stunning Phang Nga Bay and enjoys a constant flow of fresh breezes at all times of the year. The surrounding peace and tranquility makes the Yacht Haven Marina of choice when traveling to Phuket.
Before heading south we will venture north into the silty dark waters of Phang Nga Bay. Here we'll explore magical secret lagoons and possibly venture into the winding streets of the world famous floating village at the river mouth of the Phang Nga river deep into the national park. Calm waters, local fishing villages, and towering limestone islands make this area unlike anywhere else.
On our sail south we will wind through the Koh Hong Krabi archipelago. Krabi is world-famous for its beauty, and these islands are a perfect example of why this part of Thailand is so popular. Catering to more laid-back visitors, Rai Le Beach offers excellent dining and the opportunity to get a massage in the shade on a pristine white-sand beach lined with coconut palms.
Sailing nearly due south takes you to the Phi Phi Islands, one of the most beautiful archipelagos in Thailand. Phi Phi Don is the largest island in the group and has the best anchorage and facilities at Ton Sai Bay, where you’ll find restaurants and bars with lively nightlife. To the south is Phi Phi Le, known for its pristine beaches, excellent snorkeling, and rugged high cliffs. The movie The Beach, with Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed at Maya Bay on Phi Phi Le.
Knowing that around the corner from you is the perfection of a white sand beach on the island of Poda, the real glory lies in an unassuming rocky pocket beach on the other side of Koh Poda. If you are an elite rock climber you’ve been made aware of this rock-like island, but the appeal holds for us lesser accomplished adventurers also. The past-vertical rock hanging over the sea has some surprisingly fun and approachable little climbs that let you to simply kick off into the ocean when you start to feel like you have enough exposure. Beyond the adrenaline thrill of overhanging cliffs and rock walls that jet vertical out of the water, there is superb snorkeling and a little shady alcove ashore with a beach wedged in between rock walls.
After a morning on the popular Koh Phi Phi Le we will set sails for a small island surrounded by excellent snorkeling in crystal clear water. Dinner here is served in a little local fish restaurant perched on the rocks above the cove.
